British Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through surveillance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to target a number of entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," officials stated.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

Daesh - also known as ISIS - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This strike underscores British leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the minister remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I extend gratitude to the personnel of British forces who took part in this operation for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were among numerous UK service members on duty over Christmas and New Year. This action, to take out militants who pose a risk to our security, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and strong abroad."

In December, the US military conducted what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an ambush resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in Palmyra.

The United Nations reports Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
