The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five European individuals working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as the French president accused Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures that were central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, European activists have led organised efforts to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against an ex-European commissioner who helped draft the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, whereas EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.
This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash between Washington and Europe.
