Seven accused individuals of German far-left organization face trial over multiple attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that earned them the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the United States classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist organization together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary from 2018 through 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for far-right supporters.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several severely injured.

Trial details and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, coinciding with an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from across Europe.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the identical event in 2023.

Regional context and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant anti-fascist networks that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within the organization, tasked with planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Alongside Paul M, he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. In storage facilities managed by the suspect, the group allegedly accumulated hammers, pepper spray, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E., became a cause celebre within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

America's terrorist listing makes group members ineligible to enter the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “taken note” of the US designation.

“The danger from the [Antifa Ost] group has recently decreased significantly. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either received convictions or remain detained.”
