The Baldur's Gate 3 Creators Reveal a New Divinity, Calling it Their Largest RPG to Date

The speculation surrounding this year's gaming ceremony has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a puzzling photo of a strange statue. The question is finally answered. Larian Studios is developing a fresh Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer that included intense imagery, from a burning man to an orgy and the very unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not being worked on now.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be building a more action-oriented experience rather than another turn-based title. At this moment, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the recent resurgence of crunchy computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, branching plots, and complex character building—elements that subsequently found massive success in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is traditional swords and sorcery, what truly sets Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust bestowed upon the player.

Where many modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is brimming with niche playthroughs only possible if you're playing as a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to experiment throughout the entire experience. Nearly every quest can be completed in multiple ways, sometimes in unexpected fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a clever way.

More to Come

It is this design philosophy that have cemented the series to declare games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as one of the best role-playing games in history. Now, players can get ready for more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
